Kevin Maher says Blues have “nothing to fear” when we go to Chesterfield at the weekend.

It’s set to be our first game for two weeks, following three consecutive postponements due to the weather, and Maher spoke to the media two days before the trip to Derbyshire.

He claimed: “They’re in unbelievable form and the numbers they’re putting up are incredible. It’s a great credit to them and the job that Paul Cook and his staff have done.

“Their home form tells you that they’re rolling everyone over at the moment, but there’s nothing to fear in football and I’m sure they’ll be wary of us as well.

"Hopefully it makes for a good game with two teams that both go out trying to win football matches.”

Maher said the latest postponement, away at Wealdstone, was out of our control. “We wanted to play, we were prepped and ready to go, but when you walked on the pitch, you could tell that it was never going to be on. It’s disappointing for us and for the fans that travelled, but we move on and look forward to Saturday.

“That game being called off has changed things slightly, so we’ll prepare properly now and have a plan in place for how we go about our business even though it is such a tough ask.”

The Shrimpers have certainly been able to get plenty of training in, but Maher says the best way to build a good team is by playing matches, which will now come thick and fast until the end of the season.

“Sometimes your best learning is playing matches, but you just adapt. It happens at this time of year – not everyone has the facilities or the groundstaff that Premier League clubs do. You’ve got to adjust accordingly.”

Finally, he was asked whether there could be any more incomings. Maher said: “We’ll always look. It’s coming up to the end of the transfer window for the Football League, so when that closes, it opens it up to National League teams who can still do stuff.

“Injuries and suspensions may play a part as well so we’ll keep an eye out for what’s about.”
