The wing-back opened the scoring with his second goal of the season, heading home from a Cav Miley corner, before Shaun Hobson did the same in the second half to make it eight league games unbeaten.

On the set-piece prowess, Scott Morriss said: “We do set-pieces on the training ground and we’re there to make it count.

“The gaffer’s given us targets for the amount of goals he wants us to get, and I’m just happy to contribute. It’s a credit to the staff because we go through them in every meeting and on the training ground every single day.

“We all know our jobs and where we need to be and if someone isn’t doing their job, they’ll know about it. It’s always important especially in away games like this where you need set pieces to go your way.”

When asked about the performance as a whole, the summer signing made the point that although it perhaps wasn’t Blues’ finest display of the season, the three points was the most important thing.

He said: “I’m very pleased. I don’t think it was the most eye-catching performance but if we’re going to achieve anything this season, they’re the ones we need to go on and win.

“At the start of the season, we were playing okay football and weren’t really picking many points up. York are a good outfit and we’ve come here, been ugly, been effective and got the three points and that’s all that matters.”

Collin Andeng Ndi kept yet another clean sheet, Blues’ sixth in the last eight league games, and Scott-Morriss explained how the defensive record enhances the mood around the squad even more.

“Clean sheets breed belief in the group. You feel the confidence amongst each other on the pitch, and if someone does slip up or make a mistake, then the someone else will look after them. We have that belief that we’re going to stop teams from scoring.”

The Shrimpers make the trip around the M25 on Tuesday to take on Barnet in a rearranged fixture, with the defender insisting that the team won’t get complacent ahead of the game.

“It’s a good thing having confidence, but this league will bite you in the backside if you get carried away. We’re back in training on Monday and we’ll be ready to go for Barnet.

“We knew going into these three away games before Notts County that they’d be tough. Away games anywhere up and down the country in this league no matter where they are in the table are tough, and we know we’re in for a battle against Barnet.”
